Hello, fellow Sigmas! I'm Becka, your new secretary. For the 2018-19 school year I've created a new website for the AAU chapter. You can find information about our chapter, view upcoming events, and (most importantly) read our new blog, Vox Maris (Latin for "the voice of the sea")!
I hope this blog will be a space for us to share things we love to talk about. I believe Sigmas are united by our passions for acquiring and sharing knowledge, especially about words and languages. This blog will give any member the chance to share their ideas in a stress-free setting—I'm so much more eloquent when writing than when speaking—and will help members get to know each other's interests and stay connected throughout the semester.
You can write a book review, talk about the role of feminism in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, make a vlog, criticize a popular TV show—whatever makes your pen scribble. Nothing gets me more excited than when a theory or concept I'm studying in class turns up in the real world. Tell me about that!
Studying English is about so much more than the degree we will leave with or the first job title we'll have. Studying English is about reflecting on inner and outer happenings, listening to multiple perspectives, and being conscious of the effects that any type of communication or media have on society. English is more than a major; it's a way of existing.
